THE COALITION PROPOSAL. WELLINGTON, July S. There has boon very little talk in the lobbies to-day regarding the Coalition question. At the conclusion of the caucus of the Government Party to-night, the Prime Minister said that the caucus had authorised him to continnwthe negotiations for a National Carnet with the Leader of the Opposition. Mr. Massey stated that he promised that no definite arrangements would be made without his party being again consulted. READJUSTMENT OF PORTFOLIOS. WELLINGTON, July S. Ah important rearrangement of portfolios to allow the Hon. James Allen (now Minister for Defence, Finance, Education), freedom to devote all his attention to Defence matters, was decided at a meeting of the Government Party to-night. The Prime Minister made a statement on the subject after the meeting. “There was a very long discussion at the meeting/’ Mr. Massey said, “a* to the best means of improving the condition of affairs at the Trentham camp, and of giving the Defence Minister an opporunity of devoting the whole of his time to tie administraioa of that department. It is wellknown that Sir Francis Bell has been administering the Education Depart^,
ment for some time, and Mr. Rhodes has also been assisting the Defence Minister for the last month. I will now take over the greater part of the administration of the Finance Department, allowing Mr. Allen to deliver Fnancial Statement, which he has prepared, and which is now almost jitacy for delivery. ’ *
SCARCITY OF DOCTORS. WELLINGTON, July 5. With reference to the hundred doctors that the New Zealand Government has been asked by the Imperial authorities to supply, the Minister for Public Health states that owing to the number of medical officers that will be required for our own reinforcement* during the next twelve months, and the shortage that would be occasioned in the Dominion by sending many more doctors to the front, he is unable, except under very special circumstances, to recommend the Minister for Defence to sanction applications from the Dominion to join the Royal Army Medical Corps in England. THE TRENTHAM CAMP. TO BE MOVED. WELLINGTON, July S. The important announcement that the Government has decided to shift the Trentham camp was made by the Prime Minister late, this evening. “The Government have decided ,'i£ shift the camp, and a commenceratrfri will be made to-morrow morning,'-' said Mr. Massey. He added that he was unable to say to what site the camp would be moved, because *hc camp would be divided, and he was not in a position to say where the different divisions would be placed. “I think,” added the Prime Minister, ‘'that it will all be in the North Island. This is all I can say at present. ”
Speaking in tke House in the afternoon, the Defence Minister had referred to a preliminary inquiry by a committee of military and medical experts into the state of things at the camp. The report of the committee, was received to-night, and the result Was tke decision of the Government to move the camp forthwith.
