THE CZAR AND THE SCOTS GREYS. The Czar of Russia, who is Colonel-in-Chief of th e Royal Scots Greys, has conferred upon Private J. Lindsay Lillian, of that regiment, the Cross' of the Russian Order of St. George, which is equivalent to the Victoria Cross in the British Army. Private Lunan is the youngest sen of Mr James Lunan, Rcthiemay Place, Lochee. He is 23 years of age, and has been in the Scots Greys for three years. No details have been received as to the action which won for him the honour. Private Lunan is one of the four Scots Greys wlio have received the honour.
SOLDIERS’ RECOVERED SPEECHCorporal C. Stevens of the King’s Royal Rifles, whose recovery of speech and hearing at a concert is reported, states that on March 5 he was sitting in the doorway of a dug-out in France when a “Jack Johnson” burst at the back, with the result that he was partly buried. On the following morning h e found that he was deaf and dumb. On a recent evening he went to a hospital concert, when, suddenly to the amazement of his comrades, he exclaimed “Good!” “It almost frightened m e out of ray life,” he remarked. “Then I said a few words, and next morning I could speak fine.”
The Christchurch Tramway Board has decided (says the Press), that when the Tramway Band is proficient, the Board will give it a retaining fee of £SO per annum, on the understanding that in return the baud will give about 12 performances.
