A good example of replacement of a weed by a useful plant is afforded of a various localities near Blenheim, where h Californian thistle, even over compara- >• lively large areas, has been completely replaced by lucerne. A temporary control has been instituted to secure the conditions necessary for the germf nation of the lucerne, and afterwards the ordinary methods of dealing with lucerne, together with the competition of the lucerne and the thistle for the occupation of the same habitat, hag resulted in the suppression of the latter This is simply an example of the entrance of a plant better suited for the conditions, resulting in its mastery over the less suited species, a process that is perfectly natural and one that must always occur.
