ENLISTMENT AND - A WIFE
A fine exampile of determination to serve the country has been shown, by a Briton who travelled all the way from Tientsin, in China, to re-enlist in his old regiment. When about eighteen years of age Alfred Cook enlisted in the Royal West Surreys and served for seven yoke's. He then went to Canada, and after a time joined the United States Army. He Avas bought out, but Avlien trouble arose ovey the Phillipiues he re-joined, served through the campaign, and later Avent with his regiment to Tientsin. He AA r as made a corporal. When the AA r ar blroke out he decided to return to his old British regiment, and after a time Avas able to leave Tientsin. He spent three weeks in a train bound fey Russia, and from Petrograd he travelled through Finland, Sweden, and NorAA r ay, and landed at NeAvcastle on March 12. Spetoding a feAV days at home at Herne Hill, he met a sAveetheart Avho had refused his offer of marriage before he Avent to Canada. He proposed again, Avas accepted, got married, and after a \ r ery brief honeymoon journeyed to Guilford and re-joined his old Regiment.
