POLiCE TO WORK EIGHT HOURS. SYDNEY, This Day. It has been decided that the police shall work in eight hour shifts. A RECRUITING MEETING. EVERY MAN WANTED. MELBOURNE, This Day. Senator Pearce, speaking at a recruiting meeting in the Town Hall, said Australia had done more than anybody expected. Tl.ey had sent 63,52.2 men, and 18,978 were in training. They were pledged to send 5000 reinforcements a month, they must therefore, set out to do what they can to double and treble these figures. Recruiting could be very much totter, especially Victoria. The British authorities had informed us thatevery man was wanted. He knew there were difficulties in the way of equipment, which the Government would surmount. H e was confident that, with a realisation of the issue at stake, Australia can double the number of men in the field.
