THE CARNIVAL.
Some of those who differ with the; methods, or the preliminary course-fol-.
lowed by the Carnival Committee, seem to bo rather in a hurry in publicly: expressing adverse views of what has; been done. There arc n few facts wei should all keep in mind when tempted to impetuously criticise, the two 'chief: of which are: The object for which the Carnival is being held, and the fact that the Executive Committee was! appointed at a properly-called public meeting. The former warrants us, indeed should be a compelling forco tr make us to confer rather than stand aloof and criticise. The need for large sums of money is a pressing" reality and we trust for the honour and good name of the town that no party will take up such an inflexible attitude as'to render our efforts a farce, and our 'town to become a laughing-stock. It must be assumed that the publicly appointed committc is doing what seems .'best, and, although there may be, and evidently is, those who do not see eye to eye with the committe, arrangements are at, present in such an elementary stage ;;S to render fair criticism almost out of the queston. It must be admitted that, as is proved in other towns, one big effort is calculated to be productive of better results than a number of smaller efforts, and avo shall be glad to learn that our Mataroa friends will suspend taking any further separate action until the Central Committee at Ta'ihapc has had an opportunity of making itself heard.
