THE PROPOSED CARNIVAL.
. (To the Editor.) .'■ Sir,—Will you be good enough to allow me space in your valuable paper to express my views on the above? Carnivals being the general topic just now, it seems to me that the general public are not thoroughly conversant with what has been done in this district by way of assisting die various funds for the relief of the wounded soldiers, as well as for providing clothing, etc., for those who are at the front.
The club formed by (lie Hdies of this town has done a great deal rf work, and collected a good sum of money. These ladies have worked early and late Sundays included, (the boys don't stop fighting on Sunday), knitting and sewing, to: provide those comforts so much needed, yet onr Mayor, in his speech at the public patriotic meting on Wednesday last, di not even mention it. Still, he spent some ten minutes in eulogising the efforts of the Wanagnui Women's Club, and explaining the objects of that Institution. Anyone who attended i?io meeting must have been impressed witn the enthusiasm displayed.'All members of the committee spoke of hard work in a light-hearted manned The Mayor especially appealed for. self-sacrifice. It 'was a most pathetic oration, and now to demonstrate their ideas of economy and self-denial, they have appointed a man as secretary, at a .salary of £3 per week, plus expenses. Whilst not doubting the abilities of the gentleman appointed, I consider the remuneration is out of all proportion in view of the objects -of the Carnival. The Wanganui commercial travellers, I understand, collected some £:2,000 a week ago, and every penuy was paid into the fund. They did not find 1' necessary to employ any paid officials. Everyone worked, from early to late, with the result stated.—l am, etc., . TAIHAPEITE. 22/G/15.
