SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS. STRONG COMMITTEE ELECTED. • $$ The adjourned annual meeting of householders in the Taihape School District was held in the Schoolhouse lasl evening. Mr. A. J. Jobln as chairman of the outgoing committee, presided, and there was'a-very good representative attendance of householders, the almost entire absence of ladies being noticeable. The chairman said that he had called the meeting in accordance with Instructions he had received from the Education Board. This was their second effort to get an attendance that won!/ warrant the electon of a new committee, and he was very pleased with the result. At the meeting on a previous occasion there was a poor attendance; this was certainly an improvement. He had spoken to several and the reason they gave for not attending was that they had no fault to find with the old committee; when they had they would attend and get rid of them. This meeting was not as large as he would like ( to see, but they would do their "best with what was present in getting a representative committee. This meeting representd 400 childrn and he thought there should have been a better response to the calling of ther meeting. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The report and balance-sheet (unSe* separate heading) were adopted." The chairman said, before' going on with the election of the new committee, he would like to say a few wbrCs. This school had a register of 400 children, and only seating capacity for 298. Some of our little' ones . have to be pa'cked away in the passage, and some are put over in-the Technical School. The Truant Inspector hunted the children to school, and there was nowhere to put them when they came. The committee had written to the Wanganui Education Board., Promises had been made but so far nothing had been done. He moved that i't : be ah instruction to the Incoming committee to ask for the co-operation of the meisber of Parliament for Waimarino in approaching the Minister for Education, through the local Education Board, to urge upon him the pressing necessity of additions to the Taihape School buildings. This resolution was adopted unanimously. Mr. W. McLennan said he was sure this meeting would not like to see the old committee going out without some
notice of the good work they had done
He congratulated the committee upon the success of their labours; the children had been well looked after; the school grounds had been attended to, and it was the energy displayed by the committee that had brought the people together, and in getting the children n day's holiday down on the beach. He had pleasure in moving a hearty vote of thanks. Mr. McCormick said it was hard to please everybody; he had heard aome people complain about the asphalted school yard. Mr. G-. Bray, as an old school-commit-
tee man of some five or six years ago, when he had retired in favour of bet-
ter men, could only say that he congratulated the outgoing committee on the good work they had accomplished.
A vote of thanks was carried by acclamation.
The chairman thanked the meeting for its kind appreciation of the committee's efforts. The election of a committe for the ensuing year was then proceeded with. Mr. Beban proposed that all last year's committee present, with those who had signified their willingness to a'cept office, be members of the new committee.
Twelve nominations for the nlno seats, including that of one lady (Mrs. (Dr.) Boyd) were received, when/ on the Rev. R. H. Catherwood 's motion, nominations were closed.
Mr. Beban thought the old committee had done so well that they could not do better than elect them for the coming year; they had put up a good record and they had proved excellent men. .
The Bev. Catherwoed said the Tcf ing members were public spirited men who had done a good deal for Taihapo; Mr. Bray absolutely refused to accept nomination as he was perfectly satisfied with the committee that had been in for the past year.
Mr. W. McLennan and Mr. S. Beban were appointed scrutineers.
The result of the ballot was that-the new committee should consist of Mrs. (Dr.) Boyd, and Messrs. Joblin, Champion, Rev. Stent, Bev. Catherwoofl, Messrs. Mercer, McCormlck, Kuhtze, and Donovan. The public meeting then closed. . COMMTTEE MEETING. .At the committee meeting held at the close of. the meeting of liousenolders, the chairman (Mr. A. J.
