DECREASE OF CRIME.

It 4s thought that the bar put on; the sale of alcoholic drinks ha& had a marked;effect in discouraging crime in France.- Very soon after winshop licenses were abolished there was a big decrease in crime. From January 1 to August, 1914, there were 8,525 arrests, against 9,402 in the same period the previous year. From August 1 to September 1 there were only 992 arrests, in Paris, against 1,311 for the same time in 1913. Crimes of violence decreased materially. Professional crooks and swindlers found little opportunity to ply their calling, and gamblers, too, were obliged to give up entirely. As a result, the weeks after August 1 have left the police comparatively little to do, and 1914 closed with only 27,600 arrests, as against 34,h53, in 1513.
