Glbuston, Mining Engineer, of RockvilTe, in the Nelson D-rsfrict, who while exploring the Hinterland of his district, discovered' an- entire colony of birds which are becoming rare in other parts- of New Zealand". He has arrived in Wellington with 25 big kiwis, which ar e to be liberated on the Great Barrier Island. Mr Clbustom states h e found" thousands of big kiwis and kakapos, the latter being considered' so~ rare that £BO has- recently been offered' for a pair of them. Not only were there kiwis and kakapos on the Block, but ther e were also dozens or Blue Mountain duck, saddlebucks (worth £lO each), New Zealand robins, wrens, owls, Cook's petrels, keas, Rakas, tui, makomakos, warblers, rifleman creepers (very rare), Maori' hens, fantails, tomtits and pigeons.
