As the submarine torpedo boat is coming so much into evidence, it is of interest to recall the fact that, like many other things claimed as modern ideas, the under-water fighting was foreseen many years ago. As a matter of historical fact, it may be mentioned that when the first railway ran to London, in order to attract travellers, various galas wee instituted, and at one of them a novelty was an invention of the scientific Earl Dundonald, which was described as a boat, designed for fighting under water. In the House of Lords, the Bishop of London repudiated with righteous indignation the suggestion that soldiers In training are behaving badly as a body. In many cases they were a remarkable example of good behaviour to the people where they were billeted. The cry of “war babies” raised by th newspapers had turned out a great delusion: it was an exploded bubble. .-Women generally had behaved well. Young giddy girls, excited by the presence of so many khaki men, caused mischief. In some camps the problem was serious. At the commencement of the war a suggestion was made of a scheme for prevention of the trouble by enlisting women patrols. They would act with tact, judgment, and sympathy.
