MATAROA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent). On Friday night, the Matarca Amusement /Society held a dance, in the Matar.oa, Hail, when about seventy people assembled for a night’s enjoyment. The. occasion was the opening of the new dressing rooms, lately added by the Society, It is needless to say that the rooms were greatly appreciated, as was also the gratings and gravel leading from the road to the front .door, which pathway hitherto, haft been Iniclfned for mud* The rooms open on either side from a six foot vestibule, the rooms them* selves measuring about ten by twelve feet, with suitable furniture and requirements.

The evening was most thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Owing to bad weather, the two previous dances had not been too well attended, and the society had been seriously considering the suspension of but th c attendance of Friday night, gave fresh encouragement to continue the gatherings as usual. Altogether, the Society Is to be congratulated upon its management and zeal for the public amusement.

A very welcom e change from the hard frosts, that Mataroa has been enduring for some time past, took place on Saturday morning which entered with a very mild temperature and which farmers will appreciate. I noticed a very fine crop of swede turnips on Mr W. Shewan’s property the other day, some of them measuring from six to eight inches in diameter.

A very enjoyable send-off was given to Messrs T. Donovan,, and J. McDownell, by their Mataroa admirers on Saturday night. These men are setting a good example to many others by taking upon themselves their burden in the defence of their Empire. I am pleased to be able to say that there are several other patriotlic young men about here, who have offered their services and are awaiting them call.
