The Taihape Daily Times AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE.
MONDAY, JUNE 14, 1915. FAREWELL.
(With which io incorporated The Taihape Post ‘taa Waimarinu Newa.)
Many hearts were Tall amongst those people wiio were present on the rail-
way platform this morning for the pur-
pose of wishing those Taihape lads God speed, who have enlisted and were on their way to the training camp. Mr R. W, Smith, M.P., intimated in his necessarily very brief address that the actions of those men had been perfectly in keeping with those of good soldiers. There had been no enticing circumstances, no glamour or pageant, no flourish of trumpets to intoxicate their judgment; they had entered upon what they must have felt was their duty, with all the coolness and deliberation of stoics, and they were content to go thus, just because they thought the Empire and their .brother New Zealanders, now in the heat of tRe bloody struggle, needed them, without looking for or thinking of any public organised recogni-
’ tion of their .determinations. The action and bearing of the crowd on the ]' platform this rnornnig was more eloquent than words could have been. ! After the train moved off, and the 1 cheering had ceased, many stood silenti ly .peering through the semi-darkness ! in tig; direction it had gone. It was very evident that the temper of Taihape respecting 'lts young men going ! to the front is not to be measured hy the mans or less pretentious functions surrounding their farewells. It must have given our departing lads some pleasure tto h.av e those amongst whom they 'have lived with them to the last possible moment; it vill without doubt be a memory that will remain with them till their return. We know that there are -many of our citizens who intended to he present at the send-off this morning; some of them who have taken a foremost part in -tear local pa- | triotic Avork, both in giving jand organising and we know they \;dti feal som© disappointment at circumsf-amces contributing to the nonfulfilment' <c£ their intentions. Taihape has, however, t done its duty with regard to this great w.ar, and tlsere is every indication that u’s people will continue to do so to the : end.. The Taihape terrtiory is neither behind fa its contributions of me.n, or pf money, and although it has been .realise the lif e hnd death importance of the struggle In .which the Empire is engaged, this can in no way apply tc this district We believe that when
the war is over and information is available it will be seen that Tai’nape has not shirked its duty in any way, and, moreover, that it will occupy a position of which it can truly be said "Well done.”
