ABANDONING A CHILD. j COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE.' I {By Telegraph—Press Association.; CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. At Court, Winifred Carrick, charged with abandcing an infant at Dailingtcn last FeDTuary, hy placing it in a hollow tree stump, pleaded guilty. The Magistrate said it appeared that the child was left in an exposed position, at night, where it must have died if it had not been found. This almost amounted to an attempted murder. The accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

SAVES MANY RECRUITS. TIMARU, This Day. Ever since recruiting began dentists jhavc been giving great help by attending th e requirements of volunteers free «f charge. ' The Timaru branch of the Dental Association recently conceived' an idea of putting this work on a better footing, and they have arranged with the local recruiting officer that vollinteerswho are otherwise fit, and only required dental treatment, be sent offiially to the branch president, who will arrange for free treatment. The • scheme has been in operation for a fomalght, during which 25 men have been under treatment, officer commanding the Canterbury district expresses his warm ap* - preciation of the Association's action.

WELLINGTON, This Day, \ A memorable street scene took place p to-day, when the sth reinforcements and No. 2 Stationary Hospital made their first and only public appearance' The weather, which had been threatening, cleared for a reception, and thou- -. sands of people lined the streets, The crowd at times was extremely enthusiastic, and cheered the troops again and again, Tine splendid stature* of the men was favourably commented upon all along the line, and a finer body it would be difficult to find anywhere, They were handed flowers and fruit as they went along.

THE DOCUMENT RENOUNCED. FIRST CASE IN NEW ZEALAND. '/'■' HAMILTON, This Day. Mr. Justice Cooper was asked to decide a novel case at Hamilton to-day. A Belgian, Conrad Teigpens, who died on August 14th last year, left a will dated August sth, in which he bequeathed the greater part of his estate to Albert Upton, farmer, Waimea, a stranger in blood. When probate was asked for several months ago, Mr. Justice Cooper refused to grant it in com- . mon form and instructed that it be applied for in solemn form, joining the Public Trustee. When the renewed application came before him to-day, it was opposed by Mr. Napier on behalf of James Caughley, farmer, Woodleigh, who attested the will. He said .lie and one, John McKay, were present when Teigpens signed the will in his bedroom. Witness and McKay then withdrew to the kitchen* and there attested the will as there was no table in the bedroom. A partition between the two rooms would prevent the testator seeing him. His Honour renounced the will on the ground of defective execution.
