ENGLAND’S COAL SUPPLIES. LONDON, Jung 9. The Coal Committee reports that ■ 191,170 miners had joined the army to the end of February. The shortage in production owing to the war Is 12 million tons for the year. If there is no avoidable absenteesism, th e output •ould be increased to the extent of fourteen million tons. If labour is further withdrawn the reduction in output is likely to seriously affect other industries. The public should realise the patriotic duty of economising coal, MOTOR WORKS BURNED. ARMY VEHICLES DESTROYED. DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £BO,OOO. LONDON, June 10. The works of Brown, Hughes anti Strachan, motor body builders. Park Royal, Ealing, covering three acres, have been burned. On e hundred Red Cross ambulances and 200 army service vans were destroyed. The fire started in the centre of the works, a strong breeze was blowing and the buildings were swept right and left. A large force of troops assisted the firemen to extinguish the fire. The damage is estimated at £80,« 00 °- ■■ SMUGGLING CHINESE. '-T INTO THE COMMONWEALTH. \ MELBOURNE’ This Day. In connection with alleged smuggling v of Chinese into the Commonwealth, ‘V two officers were despatched to otherStates to search for new arrivals. Ten stowaways were recently discovered in a vessel arriving at Brisbane from China. It was decided that they be repatriated by the next vessel. Mr Runciman in the House eof Commons, referring to increased price o£ coal, said it was largely due to the heavy enlistment of miners. The output of the remainder was largely increased per man, therefore an advance of wages was justified. But, taking all facts into account, the price at the pithead was excessive, and he hoped that negotiations with companies; would effect improvement. Parliament would not tolerate exploitation.
