A STRIKE THAT FAILED.
A number of joiners at Stobs Camp, who came out on strike for an in* crease, of wages, got a surprise when they discovered that arrangements had been made to dispense with their services altogether. Shortly after midday, about 100 Royal Engineers arrived at! Stobs Camp from Edinburgh to carry on the interrupted work, which is the erection of a large number of huts being built to Government order for the accommodation in the first in* \ stance of German prisoners of war, a considerable number of whom are already interned at Stobs Camp. The joiners who came out on strike were receiving lOd per hour, and they asked Hd, while their brothers in trade in Hawick and district received 9d per hour. A delegate on behalf of the strikers vouchsafed to him was that the men were not needed now. There is no sympathy in the district for the strikers, who were making good wages.
