THE SINKING OF THE GOLIATH. A GERMAN CORRESPONDENT'S STORY; AMSTERDAM, June 7. A German correspondent in Constantinople describes the sinking of the Goliath H e says the British warships were in the (habit nightly of visiting Morto Bay, when they carried on a brisk flanking lire on th e Turkish defences. Lieut. Firle, commanding the destroyer Mauvenet.the crew including 16 Germans, received permission to attack, and crept down the Dardanelles after sunset. Sh e found two British ers. The Mauvenet's torpedo tubes were manned at one o'clock. Meanwhile the Britisher had sighted the Mauvenet. When within easy range, the Mauvenet discharged her first torpedo, which struck the Goliath under the bridge. The second ;hit her between the funnels, and the third on the quarter. A dull explosion, accompanied by a sheet of flame, followed, and she sank in three minutes without a soul being seen on deck. The Mauvenet doubled back at full speed, and when the British torpedoers closed in on all sides, they were received by a. hail of shot and shell from th e coast .defences. ..■.■■l ——
