MATAROA NOTES.

(Own Correspondent). An exciting runaway occurred at Mataroa on Thursday about mid-day. The owner's name could not be obtained, but a light four-wheeled trap with a pair of horses, was standing at the back of the goodsshed when the steeds took fright and bolted down the road. On reaching the bridge near the school, they evidently tried a short cut for Te Kapua, or somewhere in that direction when they came in contact with the bridge, two wheels remained on the road and the trap was overturned. Nothing daunted, like John Gilpini, away the pair went up the' Te Kapua track, and th e last that could o e heard of the errant pair, was that they were still on the go. Fortunately, so far as is known, nobody was hurt. The weather has been very unpleasant of late. Although none of th e settlers ar e " complaining, still, Mataroa has been seen to better advantage. The farmers in district are getting on fairly well with their ploughing and agricultural implements of varied descri% tions are frequently arriving. It "hf to be regretted that the heavy frosts ;have absolutely closed our local brickmaking establishment, as the local production is considered to be the best in; the district.

I. jcannot close my correspondence: without, on behalf ofyour readers herei, referring to several ; of your very able* leading artielea .on the war recruiting and other Wndrejl matters, including! the latest,on the "effect .of the reply %o America's ultiflpiumi.. •• j^j
