PATRIOTIC FUNDS.

[ HOW THEY ARE RAISED.

A rather general resident of Taihapewho is known among some of his friends here by the pleasant and suggestive soubriquet of “Tikiale,” found himself in a town a few .evenings ago not a hundred miles from Wanganui. While talking to a few friends twoferocious looking individuals, in some sort of uniform, came up to him, and after peering into his face, clapped hands upon his shoulder, exclaiming "You’re the man we’r ( e looking for.’ ? The Taihape man, in his surprise, made rather incoherent demurs.whic.h 1 rather tended towards guilt than other, wise. "But you’re ‘Tikiale,’ alias Cody, aren’t you,” demanded the bigger man of the two; and away they took hira, ; On arriving in what appeared to be a large Court Room, with Magistrate on th e bench, legal luminaries around a large table, and officers of the law standing about, to say nothing of a large crowd of onlokoers he was solemnly charged that he did wilfully and knowingly, at Taihape, brew a , stout; that was in every way purer and of higher qualtiy than that imported from the wide-world known breweries, in the Old Country, owned by Guinpess and Co. “Do you plead guilty or not guilty?” demanded theman on the bench. Our townsman, pleaded that he did not understand that it was contrary to law to brew the best it was possible to produce; and although counsel fought hard against conviction, the man on the bench said he could not let the defendant off as a first offender, as he had been guilty of the same offence on many' previous occasions. Moreover he warned the defendant that another charge would he laid against him if he was not careful, as it had been reported that he was producing an ale icalled, “Tiki” that was superior to Bass’ East India Pal e variety. As this was his first appearance before the Court, he would be fined £ll/ and costs.—This is how they ar e raising money tor patriotic purposes in some -towns. " *
