A PATENT MEDICINE CASE. SOME INTERESTING REVELATIONS. ■IT-'.' "■' m—~—~, SYDNEY, This Day. Under the Pure Food Act, the Crown Prosecutor proceeded against Elliott BrbsJjpbn tho ground of alleged misdescription of a patent ' medicine, Vitadatio. The Crown Prosecutor relied upon a statement in a printed pamphlet, sold with the medicine, stating that it cured Bright's Disease, Hydatids, Stricture, Cancer, .Consumption and Ringworm. Amongst expert evidence was the analysis of Dr Oooksey, which showed that Vitadatio contained 2.5 per cent, of proof spirit, also Salicylic a£id, tanninj gjentiain, sarsaparilla and senna or rhubarb. Dr. Palmer, the principal Government medical officer, declared that according to this analysis Vitadatio would not cure Bright's Disease, Hydatids, Cancer, and Consumption. He made the statement that with the exception of quinine and mercury, no drug ever cured anybody of these diseases. Other doctors supported Mr Palmer regarding the diseases mentioned.
For the defence, evidence was given in support of cures being made in Sydney. Arthur Palmer, proprietor of yitadatio, gave evidence that he was ill for 14 years in New Zealand. He was treated for dyspepsia, laver, Bright's Disease, pleurisy, and subsequently he underwent an operation at tnvercargill, which showed that he was Full of hydatid tumours. The doctor told him that the only medicines which (vould him would also kill him.
He tried "Vitadatio which cured him. He denied that Vitadatio contained tannin, rhubarb, senna, sarsaparilla or jentian. The bottle cost him a shillng, whereof the bottle was twopence, naterial threepence and labour sevenience. He declined to give the names >f certain herbs, which he said cost ilm £20,000 to get from Welber, the iriginal proprietor. The magistrate found against the endants who were merely wholesale >uyers of Vitadatio. They were orderd to pay £ls and costs.
