ACCIDENT AT TAUMARUNU!.

A CHINAMAN DROWNED,

TAUMARUNUI, This Day

While crossing the Wanganui River this morning, on their way to town from their market garden with a supply of vegetables, two Chinamen were carried down the river which is in flood. After floating for several hundred yards the trap was at last overturned and both occupants were thrown out. One managed to reach the shore, but the other was drowned. The horse was rescued after a good deal of difficulty, as it had got entangled in the harness.

Thomas Williams, who was arrested at Dunedin on a theft charge, escaped from custody at the Christchurch Police Station, yesterday. He asked permission to go to the lavatory, and it is presumed he got through the window. H e is still at large. Twenty-eight recruits who paraded at the barracks yesterday, having been ordered to go with the special reinforcements for Trentham, were told by the officer in command, that as the quota had been filled, they could not go with that force. As the men had given up their jobs and farewelled their relatives, th e matter is causing a good deal of comment. It is alleged that the blunder is due to Headquarters in modifying the call for men.
