COAL SOLD UNDER WEIGHT. Four prosecutions under the Weights and Measures Act, 1889, in respect of the sale of coal, are reported by the Public'Control Committee of the London County Council in their weekly report. In two cases the charge was that of giving less weight than that stated on the ticket, and the penalties imposed were £2 2/- costs, and £2 fine and £1 3/- costs respectively. In another case, where the offence was fraud by the carman, a fine of £1 was imposed, while in the fourth case a fine of 10/- was the penalty for failing to carry a weighing machine with weights.

Superior Judge Graham granted a decree of divorce in San Francisco to Mrs Tillie Olsen from Fred J. Olsen, a labourer, on the ground of cruelty for the two years of their married life. This cruelty culminated at a ball a few weeks ago, the wife testified, when her jhusband seized her by the ankle and stood her on her head.
