Jennings). CORRESPONDENCE.
A letteK was read - from the DepGrtment of Industries and Commerce asking whether the Chamber proposed furnishing a list of merchants desirous of getting into'ittmch with French exporters of any of : the articles enumerated in a list previously sent. If so, the Department would be glad to have the names at the earliest convenience so that they might be included in a list which was being forwarded to the French Chamber of Commerce in London.
The secretary was instructed to ask the Department -for the list referred to as havingVWeen sent in January last. When that is to hand local merchants and businessmen to be invited to assist in compiling the list asked for from tho Chamber.
The Taiumar|anlu Chamber of Commerce reference to the construction of a national highway from Wellington to Auckland to permit of motor and other traffic.

The. Raotihi Chamber of Commerce ■wrote bringing under notice the fact that the Raetihi Telephone Bureau is now open between the hours of 7 and 8 each evening, and asking-that .this be made .generally known so that business-, men might avail themselves of the convenience. general. !
|A discussion took place on jtlie cattle trucking yards at the Taihape railway station, members pointing 6ut their unfitness,, for present. needs. It was resolved that efforts be,, made to have them moved from the-present site to a more suitable ope. :r.,The,-yards were cramped and altogether . inadequate and their removal to, a site-! on the Mataroa Road was favoured.,-.lt;,was also decided to approach ; dhe,:Auctioneers’ Association and to.,invoke -the assistance of Mr, R. W. Smith, M.P.pwith a view to arranging a meeting, of those most directly interested with thpi General Manager of Railways on the-first occasion of his passing., this, way. , : . The unsatisfactory, reading between Taihape and Mataroa.was discussed. It was understood, that a deputation from the Upper Wangaehu Road Board and the Bangitiitei. County .Council were to wait on the Minister to urge the necessity of this road being put in order. It was resolved that the Taihape Chamber support the project in every way possible.
Anomalies in railway freights were discussed, and as it had come to the knowledge of the Chamber that the whole railway tariff was now under revision, the time was opportune to help in having all anomalies removed. It was resolved to hold a special meeting of the Chamber on Friday, 2Sth inst., to which all business people and all others who are interested should be invited to be present, and to bring with them any instance of anomaly that may have come under their notice, so that the Chamber may make representations to the Department to have them effectively dealt with. It is understood that everybody interested in this subject,, whether members of the Chamber or not, will be present at. this special meeting so as to enable the whole thing being intelligently dealt with before the. revision of the tariff is complete, and it then becomes too late.
The preesident, in referring to the Taihape-Napier road proposal,! said that he had called at the Public Works Office while in Wellington, and he understood that £SOO had already been authorised for the construction of the road and the approaches to the proposed bridge over the Rangitikei River on the Hawke’s' Bay side. Also that £SOO of
the original sum of £1,450 had been placed ,on ,the Estimates, to be spent this year road and approaches on the Taihape side of the river, but this sum had not.yet been authorised. So far no provision had been made for the cost of the bridge; that was an item that it was not advisable to have laced on the Estimates before approaches were provided for, but now that the money for roads by which bridge material could be got on the bridge site was forthcoming the amount required should be placed on the coming Public Works Estimates, and the Chamber should take steps at the earliest possible moment to have the requirements ' for this road provided for- It was decided to make a representative appeal ■to the Minister-of Public Works, by ■joining with the. various! bodies that up to the present had taken a lively interest- in:; the matter, including the Hawke's. The services of the member of Parliament for this district and also of the Hawke’s Bay district were also to be enlisted with & view to an early appeal to tho Minis--ter, , A resolution was adopted in favour of supporting a petition thaL is sent to the Railway Department by the 'residents of Winiata asking that the railway siding at that place bo made a public siding instead of a private one.
