The question of issuing certificates to recruits who have been turned down on account of medical unfitness is, it is understood, now being considered by the Defence Department. It was originally suggested, as in England, that badges should be issued so that they might be worn, but this has been considered that the majority of men would decilne to wear auythiug in the public streets which would proclaim them as ' ' medical unfits." By adopting the issue of a certificate or postcard, however, the difficulty would be overcome, as" any rejected men would be able to produce the same whenever he desired, and so be able to confound any critics who jibed at him for not doing his duty. The certificate or card issued in the name of each man could not, moreover, be so easily transferred as in the case of a badge.
Dealing with the question of export accommodation and the relative space allotted to the South and North Islands, Mr. Massey informed a Wellington Post reporter that in view of the prevailing drought in Canterbury, arrangements had been made for Canterbury ports to be the first ports of call for loading purposes by a number of meat carrying ships. He produced figures to show that the Zealandie during the last few days loaded 'no less than 13,985 carcases of mutton and 35,05 carcases of lamb at Timaru. Further, he quoted statistics showing that from March 3 (when the GoverrnncTit took over the business) until May (3 the total payments to freezing companies and their clients as far as Canterbury was concerned were £557,810 7/7, as against Wellington, £337,493 10/-. The comparative weight of meat purchased during the same period was: Canterbury, 24,767,0261 b; Wellington, 18.303,3861 b.
