A DROWNING CASE. FOUL PLAY SUGGESTED. VERDICT OF SUICIDE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association. 1 AUCKLAND, This Day. At the adjourned inquest on the death of William-A. Clay, found drowned in Hikutaia Creek, with a rope iround his neck and stone attached :hereto, the Coroner said: After hearing evidence, h e felt sure there was no foul play and entered a v<Jrdic+ or suicide. ' "' "" *"' LIFE IMPRISONMENT. AUCKLAND, May 17. At the Supreme Court to-day a youngmusic teacher named John Leslie Lander pleaded guilty to committing an innatural act, and not guilty to indecent assault, of which, however, the jury found him guilty. The Judge said the man was utterly unfit to associate with human beings as a free creature, and he was sentenced to imprisonment for life on the first charge and ten years on the second. HOKITIKA OUTRAGES. HOKITIKA, May 17. JTo-night the windows of several busi ness premises in Hokitika were broken by stone throwers. The owners of the shops are of German origin, and this fact is regarded as the reason of the damage being done. On Saturday night the plateglass windows of a man named Jacobs were broken by the same means, and in the local press to-day he disclaimed being a German. The police are endeavouring to trace the perpetrators of the outrages.
FOUND DEAD. CARTERTON, This Day. An inquest was held at yesterday on the body of a man found on the property of J. W. Fellingham. The verdict returned was that death was due to pneumonia and exposure. The identity of the man is still unknown. He is about 65 years of age.
