A GENEROUS OFFER.
I !i another column we publish on appeal by his Worship the Mayor for fur:els that will very soon be urgently wanted to assist those of our men who;' ii- a result of their wounds, wjjl bo veturning to our shores unfit for further , ailitr.ry mtfw, ayo, pad mx-ny of
them, we are afraid, crippled and | maimed for life. To Mr. W. J. Jorgen- j sen, well-known in this town, is to be given the credit of the idea of starting a fund for the relief of these men who, having risked their lives, have sacrificed their limbs in the defence of this fair land.. The generous offer of Mr. Jorgensen, who has deposited with his Worship the Mayor the sum of £lO5 on the condition that nine others will do the same, needs no comment from us, and when the horrors of war- are brought home to us, and when we realise that in a few weeks we shall see some of our boys to whom a few months ago we bade “ God-speed” returning to these shores, and, perhaps, to this very town, crippled and maimed for life, we shall then recognise what they have done for us, and what we should do for them; and we are confident that this town and district will quickly fill, aye, and overfill, the list which Mr. Jorgensen has so generously headed.
