SOME NOTABLE CAPTURES. (Reed. 9.25 a,m.) PARIS, May 11. A communique states: We repulsed an attempt at nig(ht to retake captured earthworks at Saint Georges Our progress northwards of Arras continues.
We invested Carency on three sides wher e we captured 230 more prisonerg and several machine guns. Germans now have precarious communications. At Carency the enemy's reinforceemnts wer e brought by motor cars from Lens and Douai, but they did not enable- them to regain the upper hand. Our fire smashed four strong counter-attacks yesterday after, noon at Loos, Notre Dame, Loreta, Orachez, Neuvill and Saint Vast, witjh very heavydGermaix losses. We also gained ground and took over a hundred prisoners. Up to last evening upwards of fifty officers were captured. FRENCH TOWN BOMBED. BY GERMAN AEROPLANE. PARIS, May 11. A Taub e dropped several bombs on Saint Denis, when much damage was done and many were injured. Aeroplanes drove the bomber off. FRENCH MAKE GOOD PROGRESS. 3000 PRISONERS TAKEN. WELLINGTON, May 11. The Premier has received the following cablegram: ;. LONDON, May 11. Paris reports that north of Arras, despite several German counter-at-tacks, gains were maintained. The number of prisoners taken is over 3000, including 40 officers. In two days we took ten guns and fifty mitrailleuses. BATTLE COVERS 25 MILES FRONT. SERIOUS THRUST INTO GERMAN LINES. PARIS, May 11. The Anglo-French offensive covers 25 miles. The advance in the French sector is more than at Neuve Chapelle. The German line protects a valuable railway system, and if pierced the Allies would threaten German communications. The position is exceptionally strong, consisting, of slag heaps connected by a maze of barbed wire and communication trenches.
GREAT ATTACK- AT LA BASSEE
FRENCH SUPPORT BRITISH. BATTLE STILL RAGING. LONDON, May 11. The Daily News’ Dunkirk correspondent says a great British attack at La Basse.e commenced at dawn on Saturday. A heavy artillery duel was fought at Bailleul, 15 miles away, and lasted seven hours on Saturday. It wn«resumed at three on Sunday morning and is still raging. Under the big guns our infantry are pressing onward for a great thrust at the I.a Basse*; stronghold. The French are supporting us with great vigour. GERMANS CLAIM SUCCESS. HEAVY LOSSES TO THE BRITISH. BERLIN, May 11. Official: An Anglo-French attack was. delivered south-west of Lille in reply to our success in Galicia. It was directed on the German positions east of Fleurbaix, east of Richebourg, Vermelles, Ablaiu, Ncufville, and St. Laurent, near Arras, At least four fresh army corps besides old troop? made repeated attacks, but were everywhere repulsed with heavy losses, especially to the British.
