The Taihape Daily Times AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE.
TUESDAY, MAY 11, 1915. THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
(With which is incorporated The Talhape Poet xi»a "Waimarinu News.)
The old vitality and spirit that .made Taihape the largest and most progressive town on the Masn Trunk line-was abundantly evident -ut the adjourned meeting of the Chamber (.f Commence last evening. No one need have misgivings about the future of the plaee while its leading commercial men display such enthusiasm in matters affeet- . ng its welfare. While its most vital f .needs are thus looked to it requires no | gift of prophecy to predict the result. The town has grown with the rapidity <mE a mushroom, but with the stability of & Tv*Qjc, during the past tea years, and witfr *he continued exercise of *hc game spirif •■ ano< - concern that has b.e<cii characteristic* of its b"sinessm<m in t% i past it needs nO Passing at what it m)l be in ten The commit,.
wantd no one to accept nomination unless lie was prepared to give the time necessary for pursuing effective aggressive work, md there is every indicaton that the Chamber of Commerce may place the fullest confidence and reliance in its newly elected executive, for after most searching observation t seems impossibe io place the finger ora weak spot. We need only say that we believe the right men have been elected and we look forward with the utmost confidence to a period of usefulness and progress. There is no occasion to dwell upon what a Chamber or Commerce is capablG of doing for its district as we have almost numberless instances in various other centres, but it may be remarked that wherever such an organisation has kept up continuous and sustained effort it is gloriously reflected in its buildings and business.
Yt another rase of th< high value of land arc/und Taihape for stock fattening has come to notice. From a farm of 400 acres, last week, 1000 fat lamb? and 220 fat sheep were pur chased and entrained for the freezing works. These sheep were in prime condition, and they were fed solely on this small bush farm, being assisted only by a little rape. A.s this farm, which is of precisely similar character to the land in the same neighbourhood, has proved, in a season like the one just experienced, that it is capable of turning off three prime fats to the acre, a very good idea is formable with respect to what this territory will do when the freezing works at Winiata are in operation, and the land is p;:t to its fullest fattening capicity.
