Writing to a friend in Palmcrston North, a Leeds factory worker states that he and his fellow-workers are forbidden by the authorities to join the army, as they are at present more urgently required to make special machinery for the manufacture of cartridges, shells, rifles, guns, etc. Two men did enlist without the firm's permission, but when it was found out they were seat back to work.

It is stated that the Star and Garter hotel fire, which caused a recent Oamaru sensation, or. rather, matters connected therewth, will occupy the atten-

tion of the law courts. The insurance companies that held risks on the building and its contents have so far declined settlement, and actions for the recovery of the amounts of the policies are threatened. The reasons for the attitude of the companies have not been disclosed, but it is understood that they are acting on advice.

Khe vas cm old French lady, SO ;.-:"■;;•; •:■-' Pcre, 'vho had been arrested and heavily fined for calling two German officers '•'? pair of donkeys." "But, colonel." the old lady asked before retiring from the august presence, ■'is it also false and criminal to describe donkeys as gentlemen?" The colonel was quite angry. "My good

woms'-n,""' lie s::id ; "don't waste our time asking foolish questions. You may call donkeys gentlemen if you like." The old lady smiled a sly smile and her eye twinkled. She bowed politely and remarked, "Very good. Good afternoon, 'gentlemen.' " The officers felt as if they wanted to shoot her. The following advertisement appeared in the columns of the Dominion: "Smart young man wants a job of any sort, strong and willing. Apply 'Strong/ Dominion office.' 7 ' Amongst the replies received were the following, which the advrtiser handed over to a member of the advertising staff: "How about trying Trentham and the Front?' " u Why not go to the Government Office and enlist?" "Strong young men are what the Empire requires. If you are a MAN, why not go?'—One Who Admires the Brave and Deplores Cowards." The second of these messages, which may be regarded as fairly representing public sentiment, was plainly in the handwriting of a member of the gentler sex ('adds the Dominion).

The well-dressed window of Mr. Little's emporium during the past week has contained a mysterious clock, which has been the cause of considerable interest and curiosity to passersby. The face of the clock is directed towards the street and the question to be solved is the class of mechanism by which the clock is worked. There is apparently no clock-work to move the hands and there is at present a keen competition in progress for the solution of the mystery. The three questions to be answered are very clearly indicated and anyone may enter, provided a certain amount has been expended at the shop. The prize of 5 5/- will be given to the sender of the first letter opened on .Tune 30th givingthe correct answer. Here is an opening for the ingenuity of Taihape residents,.

(To-day is a rod-letter day in the history of the distnst as it narks the commencement of the erection of the Farmers' Co-operative Free/dug Works at Winiata. This morning a number of trucks of material and a gang of men arrived at the site of the works and immediately commenced operations. The works are due to be ready for occupation on November 1. The large number of debt cases on which requests for adjustments are made to the Court was the subject of comment hy Mr W. R. Haselden, S.M, at the Court yesterday morning, when ■i perpetual request of the nature indicated was before the Court "I am afraid I will have to speak in the same manner as Mr Kettle ha s been speaking at Auckland respecting these continued requests for adjournments in debt cases. Tjhe adjournments are out of proportion to the remainder of the civil busines a and are liable £b get the Court b usiness waterlogged. I think we will have to clear the decks and straighten these cases out a little." The solicitor who made the request wjhich prompted these remarks volunteered the information that in the case mentioned defendant was paying by instalments and to obtain judgment against him would be a possible hardship whilst it would not be fair to plaintiff to have the case struck -•~t. Mr HfiTddeii then stated that
