RANGITIKE A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the General Committee of the Rangitikei Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held last evening, there being a good attendance of members present. In the absence of the president (Mr. W. Dixon) Mr. D. Addis was voted to the chair.

The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed and recommendations re the personnel of a special committee for conducting the Winter Show were approved and ordered to be inserted in the minutes of the present meeting.

A letter was received from the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association in connection with a scheme for the subsidising of A. and P. Associations out of the Totalisator Tax, with the obcct of encouraging horse-breeding throughout New Zealand; more especially the production of horses suitable for military purposes. Lengthy details of the scheme, which was evolved by Mr. J. M. Johnston, treasurer to the Manawatu Association, accompanied the letter; Mr. James thought the scheme', in the main, was a good one, but he thought they should have a little time to consider the details before wholly committing themselves to it. He moved that the secretary of the Manawatu Association bo advised that this Association approved the scheme generally. Mr. G. Bray seconded'; he thought about all they could do now was to approve the scheme.—Carried. Messrs. Simms Cooper, through their local agent, Mr. J. Webb, donated a cup for competition at the next Autumn Show, under the following conditions: —The cup to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals. To be awarded only to exhibitors farming within a 30-mile radius of Taihape and the one that secures most points in tire freezing classes' for sheep and lambs. Sheep to be the property of the exhibitor for three months prior to the Show. Lambs to be grass-fed, and bred by exhibitor. The cup was accepted with thanks, and Mr. Dooie and the secretary were appointed to wait on Mr. Webb, asking him to reconsider the restriction rc grass-feeding as regards lambs. The chairman introduced' the- question of remits for discussion at the annual Agricultural Conference to be hold in Wellington in July. He thought the Californian thistle question should form the subject of a remit. There was a good deal of it about and he' could see no possible chance of being able to Cut it; they could not cut it for £2 per acre a year. The question had' come up for discussion a good many times in public but nothing final had been done. His opinion was 1 that they should let the thistle grow and it would die out in time —that was - his experience’. It was a moral certainty that they" could not cut it in tins district.

After discussion, it was T'o'scdvcd that the Californian t hist-1-should be removed from the second to the third schedule' of the Noxious Weeds' Act so far a.S‘ this district fs con corn ..id, placing it under the control of the Iona! governing’ body.
