THE DUERKOP CASE. ACCUSED FJNED £ 100,(By Telegraph. —Press Association.; WELLINGTON, This Day. Wilhelm Henrich Magnus Duerkop, who had geen found guilty on. four charges of trading with the enemy, came before Chiei Justice Sir Robert Stout yesterday for sentence. Accused in a short speech from the dock expressed regret that his actions had been determined a breach of the law. When, he redirected cargoes he wa s uncer the impression that he was within his rights. He had given every assistance to the prosecution and admitted that the prosecuton had given him every assistance in preparing his defence. The. Judge said the case was peculiar in that the negotiations were entered into, before the war. ... The jury did not allow any feeling or- resentment to influence their verdict and he believed it the only verdict they honestly could have delivered. In view r of the whole circumstan- " ces of the.case he .would deal leniently with the accused, although the - Government did right to prosecute to show that trading with the enemy was a serious business. Accused was fined £IOO, in default three months' imprisonment. MAORI GiRL ESCAPES FROM PRISON. WANGANUtf, This Day. A Moari girl, named Mako Kaimoku, escaped from the police gaol about 7 this morning. She had evidently forced the door into the warder's office and escaped while the official was attending to other inmates. The escapee is about 19 years of age, and is on remand on a charge of theft. There are no trace s to her whereaboutts. LOCAL BODIES ELECTIONS. ELTHAM NOMINATIONS. ELTHAM, This Day. C. H. Buckeridge and B. Dive, exM.P., are candidates for Eltham Mayoralty, and there are eleven candidates for nine seats on the Council. G. W. Tayler is returned unopposed on the Hospital Board. WAIPAWA NOMINATIONS. WAIPAWA, This Day. W. J. Limbrick was returned unopposed as Mayor. MytfRTON NOMINATIONS. MARTON, This Day. The Marton nominations are as follows: Mayoralty, R. E. Beckett and F. C. Wilson. Nineteen are standing for sir seats on the Council, including . all retiring councillors and the late Mayor.
