A Press Association cablegram states that Baron Herbert Reuter, aged 68 years, managing director of Reuter s Nows Agency, London, shot himself whilst in grief over the sudden death of his wife, whose body was awaiting burial. Lady Reuter was a Miss Campbell.

At the Stratford Magistrate’s Court, Jesse J. Hills was charged with failing to clear his property of ragwort. Accused had been previously fined £5 for a similar offence. His Worship said that it Was evident defendant was conversant with the Act, but preferred to pay the fine; £7 and costs wonld be imposed. His Worship intimated that if ca-ses continued to come before him, he would raise the fine to £2O.
During the week ending April Jt7h . the Labour Department received applications for employment from 19 married and 61 single men. Two lusty topers, in bravo mood as the result of their potations, grew insolent when refused liquor in a local hotel, (says the'Napier Telegraph) and used vile language. They refused to leave, and the athletic proprietor laid hands on them and, hauling them to the rear of the premises, gave each of them a thorough sousing in. the horse trough. So that, after all, they got liquor, although not the kind they wortlooking for.
In the majority of cases the public have not the, vaguest idea of the meaning of the different colours of the troops’ hatbands. Some imagine, that they denote the district the men come from, and others which company they belong to. The colours really indicate what arm or branch of the service the wearer is attached to. The various colours and what they signify are as fob lows:—Khaki and white —Army Ser'vico Corps. Blue and red' —Field Artillery. Khaki and black—Engineers. Khaki and green—Mounted Infantry. Khaki and red —Infantry.
Kitchener war stories are. rare now. The great soldier who has performed the wonderful feat of creating a new British Army of millions of men in a few months is far too busy a man to talk much or to be talked to. As a matter of fact, his habitual taciturnity and reserve of temperament are stated to be even more pronounced than ever, and ho always had a pronounced dislike of the limselight.
