One proposes that no member of the Labour party supporting the scheme be eligible for next election; the other is that the schemje is in contravention ■:f a plank of the Labour platform,' and is unsound and should not be adopted. Various speakers strictured the Government. Mr Holman, replying, explained that the Norton —Griffiths scheme was only an alternative to cessation of public works. Th e scheme was a departure from, the Labour platform, but it was equally the duty of the Government to keep people in employment. Mr Hughes said h)e didn't understand the scheme, but hie thought it a step backwards. He asked whether the Labour party came into Existence to acll upon capital in the hour c* ueed arid give up their platform ideals for four million for from three to five months? It would undo all they had striven for for' years. It was hiring capitalists to take the place of the State in the employment of labour. It was a precedent, the Comm.onwealth did not emulate. Mr Holman had striven to promote the best interests of workers. Both motions were lost.
