BELGIAN FLAG AUCTION.
SPONTANEOUS GENEROSITY THE FINAL PURCHASER. Prior to the commencement of “Lady Windemere’s Fan” at the Town Hall on Thursday night, Mr. W. McLennan auctioned a Belgian flag, which bore the autographs of each member of the Plimmer-Hall Company, The response was generous and £3O was obtained in a few minutes. Mr. A. James got in early with a bid for half a guinea, which Mr. Sam Powell immediately covered up by a call of “A guninea here.” The flag was knocked down to Mr. Powell and was resold to Mr. T. A. Garratt for £l, G. W. Wrightson £1 1/-, D. Neagle £1 1/-, A James £1 1/-, W. McLennan £1 1/-, S. Peyton £1 1/-, H. J. Jaggard £1 1/-, R. J. Bird £1 1/-, H. J. Dashwood £1 1/-, T, Menzies £1 1/-, F. W. Somerville £l 1/-, W. J. White £1 1/-, R. Davies £1 1/-, D. McLennan £1 1/-, J. McCracken £l, A. J. Joblin £1 1/-. Here bidding temporarily ceased. “For keeps this time,” said the auctioneer. Half a guinea was immediately called and bids soon wet up to £2, when Mr. Jos. Webb called £5, and the flag was knocked down to him amidst applause. “Put it up again,” called Mr Webb, and Mr. T. A. Garratt was the next purchaser at a guinea, then Mr, E. L. Peed £1 1/-, H J. Dashwood £l, and Mrs. Lyndon £2, and the flag was knocked down to her at £2. Mr. D. Neagle increased his donation from £1 1/- to £2 2/-, and Dr. Barnett gave £1 1/-, which made an excellent donation of £3O to the Belgian Fund. At Palmeston a like flag bruoght £25 and at Marton £26 15/-.
