SALE OF PRIZE STEAMERS. ■ To-day, January 5, there was held at the Merchants’ Hall an historic sale, of ships, comprising five German prize steamers lying in' the Baltic. About p thousand representatives of British shipping interests wore present. The first steamer put up was the Tiller Boog, of 1,698 tons gross register built at Rostock, 1908. The first offer was £14,000, and the steamer was finally knocked down to Messrs. Baird, of West Hartlepool, for £23,000. Loud applause followed the sale. Another German vessel, the Schesien, late of the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd, was offered. She was described as the piece do resistance, and the assembled merchants were told that they might sing the “Marseillaise.” She was fitted with submarine signaling, but this was sold separately. First bid was £25,000. Am? the price rose to £05,000. She was bought by Thomas and Co., of Liverpool. The vessel is 5,530 tons gross and was built in 1907. The proceeds of the five vessels amounted to £130,725, and go to swell the Poundage Fund to be distributed among the men of the fleet.
