AUCKLAND FREEZING INDUSTRY. A SERIOUS HOLD-UP. AUCKLAND. March 17. Such is the stagnation of the froKe meat trade that the big freezing woriat Southdown have been closed dow; for the whole of this week. T;; steamer Eotornn is about to load *?■ thousand carcases for London, bnl this is only equivalent to three days' output from Southdown. In a day u two the Karamea is to arrive and loai 12,000 carcases (equal to four days' output), and the Pakeha is due on April sth to take IS,OOO carcases (The result of six days' killing;. As a result of the inadequate supply of ships, the works of the, Auckland Farmers' Freezing Co.. will only operate for about '.'.() days in the twr An interesting development has oc curred in connection with the arrangements for facilitating the payment oi farmers who desire to sell stock i the Auckland district. It is that a fir e.ilar is being issued by the froozim company offering to finance individtia farmers between the time of the deli-, cry of stock to the works and the is suing of cheques by the British Boar-' of Trade ('meat supply branch). TL •oinpany has realised, the serious con ■iOi'uiCiioes whicli would probably resnl to small holders of stock if then had t. wait, say. six of eight weeks for pay meiit. The Auckland, Freezing Co.. unlikrmio of the companies in the Soul! island, does net make a practice o buying stock which passes through it works. ARBITRATION COURT, AN IMPORTANT QUESTION. • JllOIU.n INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES BE RESUMED? CASE FOR THE EMPLOYERS. WELLINGTON. This Day. Res: { ding the cc:t ci living, M » V jor contendc:! Cue by Incr3S--ijl wages the Ocurt would be aggravating the position. The employers viewed *h:dr application as an attempt to
obtain wages based upon a con- i diiiui c : . things thai could nol in any case obtain for any great lenlgth ci' lime, and they asked themselves what the attitude cf the workers would be when ma.tiers resume their normal condit.icns, cp, more serious still, if matters became sub-normal. If it could be shown that the wcrkfevs were working under lois favourable conditions than in other countries., then pcrhap.- }\ r . Couit might* f.ct. There were one-thing like JOO di.-.putes filed bofore the Con i, and how way the Court u deal with thorn if iv decided tc resume fiie hearings? In most cases he felt assured the Court would be unable to agree to further increases, but if one or two increases were granted the workers in otli?r industries would feel aggrieved. He wished to refer. without in any way uttering a threat, to what would probably be the atti- j tude of the employers it they were faced with the possibility of further burdens being placed upon them. At the outset cf the war the Employers' Tederation impressed upon employers the motto, "Business as usual." The I employers had been loyal to their ! Federation, and had shouldered the | bin den cf increased cost instead of I passing it on in full. They thought ! that unicn 3 were prepared to abstain ! from making fresh claims, but if they I felt they were to be subject to the { annoyance, trouble, and expense of [ contesting fresh claims at a time like j the present they would get down to I -trike business lines, charjge full extra I costs wh,erever possible, employ only such workers as were necessary, and I entrench themselves as securely as possible to withstand any bad time that might yet com,e along as the result of the war. Generally speaking, unemployment had not yet proved a serious problem. Mr Cfirey briefly replied, and the Court reserved judgment.
