KAITIEKB COUNTY COUNCIL
A meeting of the Kaitieke County Council was held at Eaul’imu on Saturday. Present: Crs. L. S. Ford (chairman), Morris, Crocker, McLennan. Grice, and McLeod.
Messrs. Humphrey and McDougall applied .for the right to erect a fense on the roadside on the Ohaknne-VVai-marine Road. —The application was granted. A coramunciation was received from the Under-Secretary or r'ublic Works referring to Mr. Dwyer’s protest re route of Eetaruke Road. The letter indicated that the road would shortly be proclaimed, when Mr. Dwyer could then make any application he may deem fit. —Received.
The Clerk of the Court, Taumarcnui, wrote stating that the Magistrate had fixed Thursday, April 15th, as the day and Tauraarunui as the place for the taking of objections to the Wanganui bridge and Hikimutu-Owhango road loans.—Eecei ved.
Discussing the engineer’s report, Or. McLeod drew the engineer’s attention to a resolution in the minute-book limiting the number of men to bo employed. The men on the Hikimutu-Owhan-go-Te Mai re road were not in his opinion doing useful work. If the Council were not economical it would very soon be in a financial difficulty.
HIKIMUTU - OWHANOO SPECIAL RATING AREA. The engineer estimated that to complete this road in full £21,000 would be required. Cr. Ford said that the Council wished to know what amount was required to metal five miles. The engineer estimated that five miles of metal would cost £8,138, represented by metalling £7,108, formation and widening £I2OO, and engineer’s expenses and first year’s expenses £B3O. Since £SOOO w T as already available from grant and subsidies ,on the motion of Crs. Ford and McLennan it was resolved to ask for authority to borrow £4500.. Cr. Ford said that the amount, proposed to be authorised would not necessarily" be nsod or borrowed. The additional sum was to guarantee that the loan would be sufficient and to prevent another appeal for the sane purpose.
Mr. Mashlan reported that 318 yards of metal over from metalling the Kaitieke Road had been purchased from the contra'ctor at 15/- per yard. The debt would be met by paying £SO wTiich remained from the loan, £l5O fr nr the special loan for maintenance, and the balance of £173 would remain as a liability to be met 12 months from date.
DOG TAX COLLECTOR. Throe tenders? for the position of dog tax collector were received. The tenderers require*! rerannration as follows: Payne '4O per cer.». of revenue, Woolston 35 per cent., Humphreys 30 per cent. —On tine motion of Ors. McLennan and Grice the tender of J. W. Payne at 40 per cent, was accepted. An amendment, moved by Ors. Morris and Crocker that the lowest tender be accepted was lost. CONTRACTS, H • Tenders for contract No.. 12, SO chains of formation and bridge on Wai-marino-Bel aruke road were received as follows: Brosnan and O’Leary -£877 17/-, Halpin £972 13/2; J. Woolston £877 11/4, T. E. Hutchinson. £BOI 0/1, O’Hanlon and Co. £7BB 11/-. The engineer’s estimate was £843 19/3. i On the motion of Crs. Grice and McLeod the lowest tender was accepted. r METALLING. McLennan and McLeod moved and it was decided! to apply thirds .to widening the fornyation. of the Kawantahi road to* augment the insufficient grant. ‘
