There ha.s also been considerable trouble with .the.foundation of Mangawhero.suspension bridge, on which the contractor is now engaged. Duigan's cbjee- . ion to inclusion of his property in. -..pedal"rating area, anil.-threat el .ijroceec*Jin.g"S for exclusion, Cr Kennedy stated that it was impossible to devise a special rating area .which ■vculd be a.bsclately satisfactory to everybody. He delineated the position shewing that the objector's property vould benefit. Mr Duigan had had ample notice and had had the whole scheme explained to him. The chairman pointed out that the time ft',- lodging objections had i<one 'oy, and the discussion dropped.
RIVER TRUST ROADING
Council had under consideration an ■account for £3l from the Lands and Survey Department for surveying and supplying' tracing of a deviation of a surveyed road crossing the Manganui-e-te-ao River into the River Trust Settlement; also the mattejr of completing the acqiiisitjion of (be new road*. With rrjjard to the survey charge, the chairman explained that tho Council's engineer being too busy the PublicWorks Surveyor, who was in the vicinity, was engaged, but it was not contemplated' that the work would cOst £3o.' The Department declined to do the wcrk'at its own cost, claiming that it was a. County, matter.—Eventually the account was passed for payment, and it was decided to instruct the soiicittr to complete' the transfer of the new land, which comprises two blocks of ten acres each.
TOWN BOARD SEVERANCE. At this stage, Cr Smith rose to take his departure from, the .Council table, the Order declaring- the Raetihi Town Board to ba a separate local body taking effect en April Ist. In so Acnas, Cr. Smjitb congratulated the. chairman en (be splendid "team" ever which he presided, and also, upon tlia harmonious . relations which prevailed. In taking a cordial farewell, he. trusted that these pleasant associations, and the progress of the County would long ci:liiiue.

Smith, whom he esteemed personally, but because it would end an anomalous 1 position. Other Coun.fiiliCi's, in iv ; Cr Smith's good wishes, paid tribute t.c the town's rpogre'sss under the regime of the Town Board, coupling Cr Sn ith's name, as chairman of that body. They trusted that progress wc-ukl be maintained under the Board's independent career. Cr Smith then withdrew from the Chamber. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Paiap.ya Road: The formation work on the remaining two miles of the aheve road, is progressing favourably i.nA will be completed in about six •:. :rks. The proposed tunnelling to • akc 4 .h0 water under a large filling has been abandoned in favour of a papa cut with totara timber tap, and this work is how being- ca.Cied cut. The construction of the Kapckapoka bridge is well under way and the voik should be completed in about :• icrinighc.

grades have not. been found to attain ! his object; however, at a later data I hope to be able to spend a few days hi the locality in search ci a mere ratable road than at present exists. Read Metalling, Rangataua^ —Thirtyfive chains of metalling ha.s been com pleted en the Ratamaire Road, and he Mangaie'itei Read is new being metalled; metal repairs will then be affected on the Ohakuae-Waiouru Read, and should be competed by the mil cf this month'. Formation Estimates —Ek-::imates are here with submitted for approximately ] miles cf 14ft formation ,cn the Oho-ru-Kariei R.cad and' ?,% miles of 4l'i to Gft formation on the Road.
Read Grading.—The Waipnna Road has been repaired by the read grader.

(Following are the estimates alluded to above: Ohctn Karici: 14ft fdrmation to section 3. block 2, Ngamatea,' S.D., £2,280; Junction. Road: 26 chains to Warren's section, at least 4ft wide in the solid, £455.) An. account for £4B from Ohakune B.C. for Council's share cf maintaining portion of Raetihi Road (boundary road) and Rartgataua road (joint road) was held over for investigation by the engineer. Dealing with the proposed appointment cf an additional health inspector exception was taken to the suggested contribution of £3O, it being pointed cut that there are now very few townships under Council's control. It was decided to offer £ls. Cr. Epp's drew attention to the langerous state of approaches to the Manganui bridge. Referred to the ?nt;ine-J.\
With regard to a request from R. A. Wilson, that the engineer estimate cost c-i forming another mile of Dread nought road, it was pointed out tha the e;uinee.r's hands are full wit?: urgent wcj.k. It was de'eided that th, estimate be furnished when the engineer is available for this work. Cr. Pemberton mentioned the need for getting Parapara loan expenditure started, and the Clerk was instructed to make enquiries ire metal pit. in discussing maintenance matters, Councillors opined that the present gauge of crushed metal is too large. Cr Harris was authorised to arrange with Mr Edwards for a few days' attention tc watc! tables on olntra Road.
The treasurer's statement showed a reduction c fthe debit balance to £4OO. Accounts amounting tc £940 18s 9d were passey i'c-r payment, and reports were adopted.
