(With which is incorporated The Tni hape Post 'J.n3 Waimarlno News.)
It is doubtful whether any action could have been taken to so effectively relieve the Turkish attack oil Egypt as that of toppling over the forts along the Dardanelles. It has struck terror into the hearts of all Turks and brought joy to all who were under Turkish suzerainty. While it continues they will require every Turkish soldier that can be concentrated on the spot, in a mighty effort to stem the inevitable. The Allied navies’ forcing of the Dardanelles passage is not only a conclusive reply to the assault on the Suez Canal but it has once more shown Germany how incapable she is of estimating the Allies’ strength and power. If Germany had thought that England could have successfully laid the forts along the Dardanelles without seriously weakening the blockade in and near the North Sea she ,would not have taken the hazardous course she has. Already Turkey is shaping well for the position of corpse number two to hang around Germany’s neck, for it seems that from both a military and economic viewpoint, Turkey’s enforced entrance intp the conflict has very materially made her position more difficult ; while, on the other hand, it has given the Allies the one opportunity of making a diversion that is practically certain, to bring hestitating, rail-sitting neutrals down into the conflict on their side. All the Balkan States must, in an endeavour to gratify their most cherished hopes, move towards the points they have respectively centred their hopes upon, and so late as yesterday we learned that Bulgaria, who only a few weeks ago was reported t(Q have received large sums of money from Germany, and who has since given assurances of strict neutrality, has been secretly mobilising her
a little into details and informs ns that three divisions are on a war footing, and that one of them has been set in motion, it is believed, towards Adrianople. What is equally significant is that a Bit! of Credit for eight millions for military expenses is now before the Bulgarian parliament. The Greek Government, by a majority of four-fifths, favours immediate action; Roumania has already made her intentions fairly clear, and there only remains to be seen what Italy will do. Italy lias been silent for the last few weeks, but it is probable that her quietness is merely the lull before the storm. There is no doubting the fact that Germany in forcing Turkey into the war has made one of the most disastrous miscalculations since the first blow of war was struck, but it was in desperation she did not; there was a sporting chance that Turkey might be able to bring about a holy war involving all Mahommedans.
