Mr. H. B. Duncan, of. Taihape, has been granted a renewal of his license under the Government Labour Department as Labour Agent.

Mr. Herman Lewis, an erstwhile Wellington capitalist, whose disappearance from New Zealand was the subject of some comment a few months ago, 'was seen in San Francisco « by a New Zealander recently returned from America.

The necessity of exercising great care in the handling of benzine, which has a. tendency to flare up on the slightest provocation, was forcibly illustrated at Okato the other evening (says the Dannevirke News.) A Maori ear-owner was opening a tin of benine on the roadside outside Fox's store, where he had purchased it, and for the purpose used a chisel, with which he made a stab at the tin. The impact created a spark, which ignited the benzine, and in a moment there was a huge flame twenty or thirty feet high. For a time the. car was in danger, but it was moved to a place of safety.

A very successful and rnvruisinstic meeting of ladies was held on Saturday afternoon in connection with a proposal to conduct an afternoon tea booth in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund on the Recreation Reserve at the Hibernian Club's sports meeting on St. Patrick's Day, 17th March. Details were discussed and committees were appointed to carry out the various necessary workß, the most important of which is a strong canvassing committee to collect subscriptions towards supplying the necessary edibles. Mrs Villars is displaying a good deal of energy, and it is to be hoped that so good and important a cause will induce such a wave of enthusiasm as will ensure the utm.Qst. success.

The Otaihape Farmers' Meat and Produce Company has been granted a license for a slaughterhouse at Winiato by the Eangitikei County Council.

This morning Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M. convicted and discharged two first offending inebriates. Joseph Whitworth, for a second offence, was also convicted and discharged, having spent since Saturday in the lock-up.

That the Eangitikei County Council is a very important body, carrying on extenive works along the coast, is reflected in its monthly "pays." On Saturday at the monthly meeting, over £4OOO was passed for payment.

The West Coast Swimming Championships are to be decided at Marton on Monday, the 15th inst. The world's amateur champion for 100 yards is to be present and will take part in the various aquatic sports.

We have to thankfully acknowledge courtesies from Mr. A. V. Brown, the honorary secretary of the Marton Swimming Club, in connection with the swimming championhip meeting next Monday.

The good people of Ohutu have or- ; £<anised a social and dance in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund, to take place on Thursday, the 11th inst. A good floor and excellent music is promised, arid as ttts price of admission is only half a crown, there will undoubtedly be a crowded gathering.

The change of programme at the Three Stars Theatre screens a startling K.B. drama, "Love versus Duty," which is crowded with clever, wholesome acting. Another very fine Lubir picture is "Traitor to bis Country.'' Then there is a beautifully coloured Pathe, "A Vintage in Burgundy," showing very line scenery in its natural colours. "Dorothy Danebrdge" h a suffragette picture that pleases everywhere. Another good drama if "Saving Word." There are also some excellent supporting films, ending with a tip-top Keystone called "Love anc" Bullets."

A fine Nordisk drama, 3000 ft long will head the splendid programme at the Station Street Theatre to-night. It is a touching, beautifully pourtrayed instance of the finest human sentiment, and is entitled "A Woman's Way." The film asks some distinct questions, among which are "Can men forget?" "Is woman's love secure?" "Does man's love return?" To all of which the drama says "Yes!" Othet fine pctures are "His Reputation ai Stake," "Lord Roberts," "Commercial Travellers' Fancy Dress Procession in aid of Patriotic Funds," "Theatrical Horse Race for Belgian Fund." and several other intensely interesting pictures.

Mixed bathing at Marton has hitherto been tabooed, but in future the sexes are to have the pleasure of each other's company in the water twice v week. A meeting of the committee of the Marton Swimming Club was held the other night, when the whole question was thoroughly gone into. The pros and cons were discussed, and it seemed to be the general opinion that the ladies would never learn to swim properly without the assistance of the stronger sex. It was therefore decide'" to allow mixed bathing on and Saturdays between 2 and 4.30 p.m The club have restricted the male "dipper" to adult members of thr club.

A notice appears in the Gazette, lr accordance with the Footwear Regulation Act, 1913, prohibiting the importation of boots nad shoes unless: (a) The soles thereof are of leather with out admixture or addition other thar of materials used for filling spaces fthanks, or rubber outsoles; or, in the case of ladies' fancy or evening footwear, of heels of wood or celluloid; o: (b) a statement of the material o: materials composing the soles thereof is conspicuously and legibly stamped upon or impressed into the outer surface of the sole of each boot or shoe. It is officially announced that the Hon. W. IT. Heries has been given the portfolios of Marine and Customs, held up till January 12th last by Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, and since the latter's resignation by the Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. F. Masacy). There is some authority given to a report that Mr. Herries is to give up the portfolio of Native Affairs, and that the Hon. "James Allen is to be relieved of Education. The new member of the Cabinet, who, is is nuderstood, will be Mr. D. 11. Guthrie, M.P. for Oroua, will become Minister for Education and Native Affairs.

The Rangitikei County Council has agreed to accept its apportionment (£SO) of the cost of the second health inspector proposed by the Wanganui Hospital Board.

Mr. Lethbridge, chairman of the Rangitikei County Council, performed a record on Saturday. The monthly meeting commenced at 11.30 o'clock, and including the reading of the minutes, which were very lengthly, all the inward correspondence —the communications numberng forty letters—were all disposed of before the dinner adjournment at 1 o'clock.

The parties in question have two lot of twins attending school, while, last week the simultaneous arrival of two bonnie babies makes them the proud parents of three lots of twins.
