The Norwegian oil-tanker La Habra, with ten thousand tons of benzine, has reached the Tyne. She was ablaze amidships for two days bi mid-Atlantic owing to a short circuit firing two tanks. One half the crew was unable to communicate with the rest, while the vessel was' battered by a terriblegale. A violent explosion blew up the deck, the fiamies reaching the masthead. The benzine swept the sea. which was aflame. Lifeboats were blown to pieces. The waves finally put out the fire. Charts, compasses and sextants were gene. The La Habra reached the Azores. Six of the crew were drowned. CHINA AND JAPAN. PORT ARTHUR AND DALNY RELEASED. (Reed. 11.45 p.m.) PEKING, March 5. A conference of Chinese and Japanese agreed to extend the lease of Port Arthur and Dalny to ninety-nine years. A WHITE AUSTRALIA. LORD GALWAY'S SPEECH. LONDON, March 4. a Mr Hareomt, replying in the House of Commons to Mr Outhwaite, stated his attention had been drawn to Mr Fisher’s condemnation of Lord Galway’s speech re a White Australia. He (Mr Harcourt) denied writing to any Governor of self-governing States suggesting an endeavour to secure remission of restrictions against Indians in view of services rendered by Indian troops.

A SENSATIONAL RESIGNATION. SYDNEY, March 5. The, Hon. Carmichael has resigned his portfolio. His reasons are understood to be purely personal. There if no question affecting the policy of the party or the Government involved. Mr Holman stated that the resignation came as a great surprise to the Cabinet. which failed to persuade Mr Carmichael that the situation did not justify his retirement. Mr Carmichael refuses to make a statement. (Reed. 1.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 5, Hon. Carmichael states that his resignation is largely a matter of a personal difference with the Premier. The caucus meets on Tuesday to fill the vacancy. Mr Holman fills it temporarily. A HAPPY FAMILY. NO RIFT IN CABINET LUTE. Mr Holman, in an interview, said thiere had been differences of opinion, recently discussed, between him and Mr Carmichael, but only on the most trifling matters; nothing like as serious as other differences which had been surmounted. There was not the slightest difference with regard to policy, public finance, party administration or any matter of public concern.
