KING’S DEATH-BED SIGNATURE.
THE LAST OFFICIAL ACT OF LEOPOLD 11. The Paris Matin relates that the late King Leopold 11., when the forts of Antwerp, Huy, and Namur were being constructed under his orders, found among his entourage and his familiar friends a spirit of resistance to his plans which caused him the greatest dissatisfaction. The journal in this connection gives the following account of the last days of the King’s reign:— "His Majesty was lying down in readiness for the terrible operation, the results of which wore destined to be fatal, when the Military Bill, which was very near to his heart, came up for discussion In the Chamber.
"Turning towards the doctor, the King said, ‘How long have I to live? [ am not asking for fine words. I know that I am nearing my end.’ " ‘Very well, sire. I fear early tomorrow ’ " ‘Send the Premier to me,’ said the King. "The Premier came, and the King said to him: “ ‘Sir, I am delighted that the Chamber has passed the Military Law which will allow Belgium in ease of need to defend her independence, I bog you to take the bill in the Senate to-day. You will tell the Senators that their old King, on the point of death, asks them to pass in their turn, with all speed and without modificaitons, this bill, in order that it may be possible to promulgate it without delay.’ ’’ This was done, as the Monarch requested. On the same day the bill was adopted unanimously, and without discussion by the Senate.
King Leopold signed it at 8 o ’clock, and on the following morning at 2 o’clock he breathed his last.
