At a meeting held yesterday, Cabinet confirmed the death sentence passed on Arthur Rottman, at the Wanganui Supreme Court, for the murder of the McCann family at Ruahine. POLITICAL. PETITION AGAINST TAU HENARE, WHANGAREI, This Day. The trial of the petition lodged by Nau Paracne Kawiti, Whangarei, and Naero Nuao, cf Kaikohe, against the return of Tau Tenare as M.P. for the Northern Maori Electoral District was opened at Whangarei to-day, before Justices llasking and Stringer. Mr Prendergast, for the petitioners, asked that four items in the petition alleging that voting papers were not issued and that electors entered the polling place more than one at a time might be withdrawn. No objection was raised except by Mr Blomfield for the Returning Officer respecting costs. Mr Prenderigast called evidence to shew that thirty voters turned up at KaraKanui on election day, but no returning officer had arrived; also that had a polling booth been provided 56 people would have voted at Wikiriwheri. Hemana said he was the chief man at Karakanui. He made attempts to obtain a Deputy Returning Officer without avail. It was too late then, to go to any other booth. Only nine voted at Karakanui in the 1911 election because nearly all went to a wedding at Port Albert, Other witnesses corroborated the latter states irient. ;
