ACCIDENTAL DROWNING. (By Telegraph.—-Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 1. Jas. Oadman, aged 18, was drowned ar the Ohakei bridge, in the Waiternata Harbour, yesterday afternoon. Tl>|e waetr was shallow and Cadman went out for a distance of 100 yards, when he suddenly disappeared, and was not ston again. The bccly was reccvaved at midnight. A mark above the l;?ft eye indicated that he had dived and struck cue of the stakes with which the vmiuiiy abounds, thus being rendered 'unconscio'-as. A VOLCANO !N ERUPTION. AUCKLAND, This Day. It is repealed that Tcnua. Bay is uninhabited, and that Kroil, 05 mites north of Navua., is in active eruption, the lava being thrown 300 feet high. A YOUNG MAN DROWNED. CARTERTON, This Day. A. young man named Henry Ernest Phillips, agi>d U. was drowned in Whaiteroto creek at Kauautara on Sunday. The deceased and a mate were bathing when the former suddenly wank. Several attempts weite made to recover his bed;/, but it was not fonnd till late in the evening. The body was taken to Featbkn'sL. i. FiRES AT PALMERSTON. HOUSE DESTROYED. PALMERSTON N., "This Day. A fire on Saturday gutted the Loyal Orange Hall. Everything inside was destroyed. A five-rocmed residence in Kelvin Grove, occupied by Jones, and owned by H. Jones was also destroyed. The Rev. H G. Bosher, vicar of AW Saints, has nesigned en account of illhealth of his family. He is returning to England in May. HEALTH OF N.Z. TROOPS. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Defence Department is advised of the following particulars regarding the health of the New Zealand Expeditionary Troops in Egypt: Seriously ill: Norman Harry Purdy, N.Z.F.A.: Trooper Robert Dugald Ross, Otago Mcunipds; Trooper William Mervyn Doull, Auckland Mcunteds; Trooper Charles Edward James, Otago Mounted s; Private David Morgan, Auckland Infantry; and Driver Charles Smith, N.Z.F.A. All are suffering from pneumonia.. Gunner Percy Stacs, N.Z.F.A., peritonitis; Privaib George Richard Wills, Canterbury Infantry, tuberculosis; Lieut. John Thomas Morcney, Otago ttrifantry—tub:V'|]lpsi.s i (dajgferculsly ill). The message adds that all are improving.
AN INVERCARGILL SUiCIDE. IN COUNCIL CHAMBERS. INVERCARGILL, This Day. Duncan Dundas, aged sixty, a bachelor, suicided by shooting himself through the head in tlib Riverton Council Chambers on Saturday night. He had been in ill health.
