THE HUNTERVILLE SENSATION, ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT. (By our Special Reporter). .* HUNTERVILLE, This Day, At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before W. Howie, J.P., and James Bull, J.P., Matthew McKinnon and Matthew Wilson were charged with assaulting John Butler. They were found guilty and each was fined £2, A further charge of assault and robbing preferred against Robert McLean is proceeding. HUNTERVILLE, Later. The proceedings ended abruptly after the evidence of McLean had been given. The Bench said the case would be dismissed. McLean gave his evidence in a straightforward manner. The decision the Bench came to created some surprise as the casts for the prosecution had not even been closed, as the evidence of Constable Essen and Gray had not been taken.
DRUIDS'CONFERENCE (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) FEILDING-, Feb* 25. The Druils’ Conference last night decided to acept the machinery clauses for the consolidated sick fund scheme submitted by the Grand Lodge executive, and also decided that all past-grand presidents should be made hon. 11.(3 members of the Grand Lodge and allowed to attend its meetings, MEAT EXPORT. TAKEN OVER BY GOVERNMENT. SCHEDULE OF PRICES PUBLISHED WELLINGTON, This Day. The conference of representatives of the freezing companies, the Board of Agriculture, and the Prime Minister with regard to the supply of meat for the Imperial authorities is concluded. A scheme was submitted by the Primja Minister and agreed to after a long sitting. The schedule of prices will be printed and issued within a day or two. The Government is new practically ready to take over the whole export business, and commence th)3 ship, ping cf meat for Imperial authorities. FIRE RAISERS REMANDED. WELLINGTON, Feb. 25. Charles Edmunds and Walter Baleh wei)3 remanded on a charge of setting fire to the White Horse Hotel at Ngahauranga, which was destroyed on July 19 last.
FIRE BRIGADES' DEMONSTRATION. i. TIMARU, Fob. 25. The fire brigades' demonstration opened in the park .this morning. The attendance was good, and the entries are large. The one man ladder race resulted Timaru 7 3-5 sec, Hawera 8 1-5 sec, Taihape 8 1-5 sec, Hokitiki 8 1-5 sec, Devonport 8 3-5 sec. In the run-off fee second place Hawera beat Taihape and Hokitiki.
Two-men Rescue: Napier 22, Timam 22 2-5, St.. Kilda 22 2-5. Twenty-eight competed, of whom nine were disqualifled and did not finish.
Coupling Event: Hastings 49 2-5, Dunedin South 50 1-5, Hamilton. 50 3-5, Timaru 51 4-5.
Modern Five-men Event: Timant 72, Hillside Railway 75 4-5, Taumarunui 77 3-5. Twenty-two competed, sl£ of whom were disqualified. Five-men Manuel: Timaru 63 2-5, Spit 67 1-5, Carterton 74, Hastings 85, Geraldine 85 2-5, Hokitiki 104, Greytown 104, Hawera 119. No others competed.
A MURDER CHARGE.
