Although n rise in tlie price of the 21b loaf of bread to 5d was announced in Palmerston North a little over a fortnight ago by the Master Bakers' Association, the increased rate lias not lasted -long, and practically all bakers have reverted to -tkl. It is stated that the "cutting" of prices has resulted in reducing the price of bread.—Standard.
There has been considerable activity in the live stock business during the past two weeks at Hastings (says the Tribune). Through an agency a special train comprising 43 trucks, carrryin», 2,500 sheep and DO head of cattle, left for Auckland recently, and a further consignment is to follow. The auctioneer interested is also shipping 9,000 sheep to the South Island.
There are indications in Ashburton that farmers expect the price of wheat to reach a much higher figure than has yet been offered this season. One Ashburton farmer on Saturday refused 0/0 per bushel for a line of prime millingwheat in the expectation that the price will reach 7/- before long. The Taihape Fire Brigade team, which will compete at the Association's annual competitions, to be held at Timaru next week left by the midnight express. The local contingent comprises Capt, Ciribbj, Branchmen Draper and Montland, Firemen Tidswell and Begg. They have been practising assiduously for some time past. The directors of the Rata Dairy Company resolved to pay out I/- per lb for January butter-fat, the total payment being £3,900. The drought affected the month's output, compared with the corresponding month of last year, by over two tons.
