Barry's brewery at Gisborne was very seriously damaged by fire on Sunday morning. A large quantity of beer barrelled for export was also destroyed.
Mr R. Lawry, for the past eight years stationmaster at Papanui, and who has been promoted to Ohakune, was- tendered a farewell social and several presents by residents of the district.
Many people had to escape in their night shirts from the. Star and Garter Hotel, at Oamaru, owing to the building having caught fire. Insurances on stock and furniture amounted to £2,750.
There is a.dearth of Justices of the Peace in Pohangina, and people requiring the services of these necessary officers in the public life have to go eleven miles one way and nine another. The Pohangina County Council is submitting the names of several settlers -in the district for appointment.
An excellent example of the exceptionally kVjen demand existing for houses in Masterton at present was afforded last week. A personal item in the Daily Times stated that a wellknown Masterton resident would shortly be leaving this district, and within 24 hours no less than 33 applicants made enquiries about the huose he was vacating. ~'
Before Mr. W. R. Haselden S.M, Roderick Chester was this morning charged with indecent exposure and with resisting Sergt. Harvey in the execution of his duty. Accused elected to be dealt with summarily and pleaded guilty .on each charge, adding, in extenuation of his actions that he was in a semi-drunken condition and did not remember what he had done. The Sergeant detailed the manner in which accused had placed himself within the grip of the law. Chester was an old offender, and his "record" including charges of drunkenness, obscene language and resisting the police over a period of seven years. His Worship sentenced accused to one month's hard labour on the first charge and fourteen days on the second charge, sentence to be concurrent.
In inflicting a fine of £5 or in default one month's imprisonment for using obscene language. Mr. W. R. IJaselden S.M this morning addressed a few words to Patrick Kearns, a young man employed on the railway construction works at Ohakune. His Worship stated that the offence was a serious one and who indulged in blasphemous epithets did not seem to realise the gravity of their actions. A maximum sentence of twelve months' imprisonment was provided by statute. He did not think that Taihape was bad in this respect, in fact it was rather better than most places, but it was necessary to remind those who came here and offended the moral
•sense of the community that their indiscretions could not be lightly tolerated. Kearns pleaded guilty to the charge, but pleaded that he was in a_statp, of alcoholic muddlement. and
The Napier .Soapworks and Tannery were destoryed by fire on Sunday.
Wanganui defeated Poverty Bay in the 'Haw Ice's Bay Cup cricket match by six wickets.
Mrs L. Mashlan, of Raurimu, is at present staying in Taihape, undergoing medical treatment.
A fire at the Gisborne Municipal power house threw the whole town into darkness at 8 o'clock on Saturday night.
