A WOMAN'S CONTRIBUTION TO TEE WAR.
A well-known Australian life assurance society has received a letter written by a woman who took a property over from the company some little time ago, who asked for a concession in the payments on account of her husband going to the war, says the Sydney Daily Telegraph. She pleaded that she had five little ones and poor father likely to die at any time from heart failure. “I gave her,” writes the manager, “the desired concession, and told her in my letter that I thought a married man with five children would be more patriotic if he stayed at home and let some of the unmarried men go to the front.” To which the woman replied, after expressing her thanks for the concessions: “I
am very sorry you think my husband did wrong in leaving us to go to fight for England. 1 knew he was just dying L o go, although he did not want to leave us. But if ho had stayed at heme we would net have been much bettci off than we are, for be would have los f Mine. Now, bo had ten years’ train ing in the Navy, and do you not think it would have been more unmanly oi him net to do his duty first to hi« xuntry? T have five sens, and I would give them freely (if old enough) to fight for our freedom. When I gave my husband. I gave one of the best men this world possesses. Me was all that was good and kind, a loving husband, and cue of the best fathers in Mie world. Think how hard it was for us to part with him. Still, I would not have him stay while there were such duties to perform. Such men as he is the Empire wants, sc I hope you will net think he did wrong in going to do IBs duty, for f think every man (be he married or single) should offer to do his duty at a time like this. I think, also, it was my duty to bid him go, although I knew I was parting with one of the best of husbands.”
