FOOD PRICES IN ENGLAND.
: THE PREMIER'S VIEWS. (Reed 3.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb 12. In a debate on food prices Mr Asquith said retail prices had risen in London 24 per cent, in six months, 23 per cent., in large towns, and 20£ per cent, in villages, a most substantial blow to the most sober-minded. The best informed anticipations, prior to the war did not think the shortage would last, after June, when feverish speculation would end. Germany had fixed maximum prices and other conditions with disastrous results. THE PRUSSIAN DIET. PEACE EARNESTLY HOPED FOR. (Reed. 8.55 a.m.) AMSTERDAM, Feb. 12 Mr.' Hirsch, speaking in the Prussian Diet, said he knew the war was not desired by the people, and by belligerent lands, its end was every-, where longed for, and he hoped that tmder the influence of this desire peace, especially for the labouring classes of all lands would assured, a peace that would come speedily to the well being of the German people and to all humanity.
FLOATING MINES. SCANDINAVIA.TAKES ACTION. (Reed 8.55 a.m.) COPENHAGEN, Feb 12. Reports state that the Scandinavian Governments* . are conferring with a view to joint action beingtaken for dealing Scandinavian waters of floating mines.
