MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present: Councillors H. J. Doherty, G. Wrightson, J. P. Aldridge, T. Elliott Wilscn, W. J. H. McCormlck. In the unavoidable absence of His Worship the Mayor, Cr. Aldridge was voted to the chair. FINANCE. The Town Clerk reported the bank balances as follows: District Fund account (dr.), £2564 16s Id. Loan account, No. 1 (dr.), £914 Is 9d. Loan account, No. 3 (dr.) £302 2s lid. Interest account (dr.), £1,068 16s lid. Oval .Domain ACcsunt (cr.), £B2 18s lOd. Accounts amounting to £lO4 2s 2d were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from Mr H. Bailey, of the Strand Picture Palace, Taumarunui, in regard to hiring the Town Hall for a term for picture entertainments, asking if the Council would let the Hall for such purpose and on what terms.
After a lengthy discussion it was decided to reply stating that the Council would be prepared to lease the Hall at a rental of £6 10/ per week, on condition that at any time the Hall may be required for local concerts, borough purposes or by touring companies it shall be vacated for such occasion. Further conditions were decided on and left in the hands of the committee to deal with.
.The secretary of the Wanganui Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote in reply to the Council's letter of the 4th February, re the Appointment of a second health inspector, stating that the Council's offer in this connection would be laid before his Board at its next meeting. He also supplied full particulars as to the estimated expenses that would be incurred by such appointment and the amounts assessed against each contributory body in the district. —The letter was received.
A letter was received from the District Health Officer recommending that requisition be served on Mr Healey to carry out certain w<crk in connection with the drainage and sanitation of his property.—lt was resolved that the letter be received. BOROUGH FOREMAN'S REPORT. The Borough foreman reports as follows on the work carried out during the fortnight just ended. In addition to the ordinary general maintenance the following work has been executed: The drainage work in connection with the Borough Cottage, Kuku St., is now r completed. The bath will be installed immediately on its arrival. All drains on Section 8, Beck V, have been laid in accordance with the Health Department's recommendation. Plumbing and carpentering work will be in hand in the course of a few days. The work in connection with Flushing Tank, Pipi Street, is nearly completed, and tank will be in use at an early date. A start has also been made to metal a portion of the Public Pound. Drainage work on Section 13, Block XIII on this property has been completed. Two small leaks have been repaired 'on the Borough high pressure w r ater ' supply.
"Work has been carried out in accordance with a resolution passed by the Council, to have bore holes sunk in about an acre of land immediately adjoining the Borough metal pit. .Thirty-six bores have been sunk, the depths of which range from- 15 feet to two feet, before the metal was 'struck, and as the borings show that the metal follows almost the same course as the existing workings, this should give an approximate face of (metal of 2f> feet in depth and an. average thickness of stripping of five feet. I The stripping which has been carried cut in the past on the present face is-very similar in depth, to what the borings show. GENERAL. Cr. Aldridge gave notice that he would move at the next meeting of the Council that the Council's resolution passed at the meeting of January 29th, 1915, with reference to the drainage connection at the Three Stars Theatre, be rescinded on the grounds that Section 3, Block VII., on part of which the Theatre is situated, was not included in the area covered by the old Sewerage Lean, No. 1, but was included in the area covered by Sewerage Loan No. 2, which provided (and this was mentioned in the voting papers) for the laying of certain sewers and flush tanks and connections to boundaries of properties.
It was resolved that the necessary steps be taken to close that portion of the road adjoining the Fire Brigade Station which at present ' is not required for traffic. An appliaction was received from Messrs Wakeman Bros, asking for permission to asphalt the footpath, in front of Ern's Hotel, and for assistance from the Council towards the ost of the work—Resolved that a rely be forwarded granting permission, but stating that the Council could not .see its way to contribute towards the CQSt, ' '* ": ? ■■•■-';■; '■';'- !!?
